Thread storage idea :)

When you are hand quilting a large project... I am currently working on about a 4 month to quilt queen sized throw.  I don't multi task quilting projects much yet and can quilt pretty quickly when I am motivated :) HA!...

So.... that thread I quilt with gets dusty and can get dirty so I decided to put it in an empty pharmacy bottle I had :)  Yep!  Upside down!!! lol
And what all is in that bottle???

My thread and a needle threader too!

My very good friend gave me the cute needle threader and the Aurifil thread I am quilting with is kind of "flimsy" in nature even though it is 28/2 Mako cotton.

Do you have a fave brand of thread for hand quilting?  I love YLI 40/3 the best but the colors available are still limited... Aurifil seems to have the best color selection!

Do you store your thread on current projects?  Or do you find you don't need to??

Hope you find this little hint on storing current thread useful!

Do you have a tip you use when slow stitching that you would like to share??? We would love to hear it!  Share in the comments below or to me directly!  I can share your pics here in a future post :)

Have a wonderful Sunday!

  1. My favorite for hand quilting is King Tut variegated - it doesn't say hand quilting thread but it is what I have used for years and love it. I love the weight(40/3) and I love the colors. I don't even think about dust with thread and I have never thought about it.

    1. where do you find your King Tut? I love to shop online for thread but sometimes the monitor and colors in real life are different... Maybe if my LQS had any thread worthy of using for hand quilting I could use it :) Thanks for sharing! New something to think about while you stitch! lol Kathi

    2. I order my threads from Red Rock Threads on line - they have a great variety - they also carry the large spools of YLI handquilting thread I know that is what a lot of hand quilters like but they carry a lot of the colors I like from King Tut -- -- also they adjust the shipping and handling when they send it to you so that if your package weighs less than estimated they subtract off

  2. I'll be honest and say that I've never researched thread weights ... if the spool said hand quilting, I'd buy it. But after my troubles with the Gutterman thread, I have to admit that I'm rethinking the thread I'll use on my next project.

  3. My favorite is Valdani 35wt (24 wt US). It comes in a variety of colors and leaves a nice stitch.

  4. With these threads what are your best needles? I am a machine quilter and I am starting hand quilting and discovering all the threads but not succeeded with needles yet. Need to know from pro hand quilters what combination works best. Thanks
