Just a little to Share

By:  Karen Goad
I don’t know how many of you get the online newsletter from the Fat Quarter Shop called the “Jolly Jabber” but there was an interview in it today from Jinny Beyer – to me the original queen of hand quilting and hand piecing.  My inspiration from when I first began quilting.
The bit from the interview that stood out to me was this question and answer.
“Q: Tell me about your sewing machine. What kinds do you have and how many?
A: I have a very old Bernina that I use once a year for mending. All of my quilts are pieced and quilted by hand. That way, I'm able to get my sewing done in short snippets of time and while traveling. “
Just goes to show that you do not need a sewing machine to make a quilt – I just thought that was fun to see.

  1. I've just discovered hand piecing. I don't think I will ever get to where I exclusively hand piece, but it is so nice to have a portable project.

  2. I taught at a quilting seminar in the 80's, and Jinny was also teaching there. It was very hot, mid-summer, and we sat underneath some big trees in the shade and she helped me hand piece my Tumbling Blocks quilt. One of my best quilting memories. I learned a lot from her that day!

  3. Nothing beats hand work, be it piecing, quilting, stitching.

  4. Thanks for sharing, Karen. I also listened to Pat Sloan on All People Quilt and she had Sue Garman on her radio podcast.. They both are such talented people.

  5. Jenny was one of my first inspirations as well. She made great beauty with just a needle and thread. I still exclusively hand quilt, but don't hand piece as often as I used to. But just last month I did hand piece two blocks and really enjoyed it!
